Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m writing to you to state my view on the water pollution problem. Itis generally accepted that water pollution is a serious public hazardtoday. Rivers all over the world are becoming polluted with garbage anddangerous chemicals. Ships contribute to the problem because they relyon rivers for disposing of wastes. Oil and other chemicals can killfish and make water unsafe for drinking. In a word, polluted water is a big problemto everyone.
As you know, people depend on water to live on. They should be involvedin finding a solution to this problem. I think, certain countermeasures need to be taken as soon as possible. To begin with, thegovernments of all countries are supposed to formulate rules andregulations to deal with the pollution problem. In addition, factoriesin towns and cities must be prohibited from draining waste liquids intorivers before they are totally treated and purified. I feel if theyviolate relevant rules or laws, they should be fined heavily.Certainly, there are some other cures which are worth adopting.
As far as future prospect is concerned, I am sure that good resultswill be achieved in this respect. Rivers which used to be contaminatedby industrial wastes will be cleaned and fish which could not livethere a few years ago will be again. To conclude, it seems obvious thattomorrow will be better and brighter only if everyone does his part andtries hard to seek solutions for its control.
If any further comment on the issue is required, please don’t hesitate to write to me.
Thanks.
Yours sincerely

2.第2篇(提纲式作文) On Developing Tourism Directions: In this part, you are towrite an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essay shouldbe based on the OUTLINE below. 1.

Tourism, asmokeless industry, is developing rapidly in China. With the reform andopening –up policy being carried out, thousands upon thousands offoreign visitors are crowding into our country. They are eager to seethis old mysterious land with a splendid culture of more than 5, 000years. Tourism as a form of enterprise brings China a lot of benefits. In the fires place, it is financially beneficial to the economicdevelopment of China. As our know, China needs more and more foreigncurrencies for its modernization program. Tourism is one of the mostimportant channels to obtain currencies. Secondly, tourism enables theChinese people to know more about the outside world. On the other hand, the foreigners who have visited China are deeply impressed by thelatest developments of out country and the friendliness and hospitalityof our people. Reports by visitors to China about how courteous andhelpful most Chinese were to them are often printed in newspapers ofmany different countries. It is clear that tourism contributes a greatdeal to the friendship and mutual understanding between the Chinesepeople and people all over the world. Everything, however, has twosides. Tourism gives rise to a number of problems. For instance, itbecomes a burden to our inefficient transportation system. Besides, theliving standard of the average Chinese is still not high enough to beable to afford the many different sorts of expenses during longdistance travels. Therefore, there are still a lot of obstacleshindering the expansion of tourism in our country. As for me, with thedevelopment of our national economy, all these problems will certainlybe solved step by step. A much better and brighter future awaits us.(287 words)

3.第3篇(提纲式图表作文) Directions: A Study the following pie chart carefullyand write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. B Your essaymust be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. C Your essay should meet therequirements below: 1 Describe the pie chart. 2 State the possiblebenefits brought about by the investment. 3 Suggest measures helping toattract investment from outside Investment in Beijing from DifferentCountries and Regions Hong Kong ---44% Japan --- 19.2% U.S.A.---16%Other 23 countries ---21.8%

SinceChina opened its door to the outside world in 1979, Beijing has maderemarkable results in attracting foreign business to invest in jointventures. According to the pie chart, the investors in differententerprises come from 26 countries and regions. Hong Kong investmentranks first, accounting for 44 per cent of the total. Japan’sinvestment makes up 19.2 per cent, putting it in second spot. Third isthe United States at 16 per cent. It is generally believed that Beijingbenefits a lot from the outside investment. In the first place, a largenumber of joint ventures have been set up, which contributes greatly tothe development of Capital Economy. Secondly, the foreign-investedenterprises offer a lot of jobs to the residents in Beijing. This inturn relieves the problem of laid-off workers in the city. Finally, thehigh-tech enterprises in the capital will grow rapidly as Beijingenjoys the same preferential policies as coastal cities open to theoutside world. As far as the measures to attract outside investment areconcerned, I think they are as follows. On the one hand, we should makespecial efforts to improve the investment environment. On the otherhand, we should take advantage of this opportunity to run the presentforeign-invested enterprises efficiently. ( 210 words )

4.第4篇 (提纲式议文) Are Prizes a Good Thing? Directions: In this part, youare to write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essayshould be based on the OUTLINE below.

Are Prizes a Good Thing? There is nodenying the fact that competitions with prizes can bring people’sinitiative into full play. Encouraged by a strong desire to win aprize, one will go all out to seek his greatest success. In addition,he will make special efforts and resort to effective measures toachieve his purpose. Consequently, the best results will be obtained ingame with awards. Everything, however, has two sides. The prompting ofa prize does not always lead to desirable results. There are alwayspeople who would stop at nothing to get what they are greedy for. Forexample, a competitor who cannot overcome the temptation of prize islikely to take a stimulant. And the hopeless competitor sees nothingbut the prize, which might cause improper behavior. Let’s have anotherexample ………. In my opinion, the remedy lies in moral education ofcompetitors, This will help them to understand the slogan:” Friendship–first, and competition – second.” Then, prizes will play a better partin any contest. Generally speaking, I believe that prizes are a goodthing, (175 words )

5.第5篇(提纲式作文) On Keeping a Diary in English提纲:1.

On Keeping a Diary in EnglishKeeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve ourEnglish writing ability. Compared with other forms of writing, it isshorter and takes less time. It can help us to cultivate the habit ofthinking in English. If we persist in his practice, gradually we’lllearn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary inEnglish, we inevitably run up against a lot of difficulties. In thefirst place, it often happens that we have trouble finding appropriatewords and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there aremany idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremelyhard for us to put them into English properly. Certainly, there aresome other roadblocks we may come across in our keeping a diary inEnglish. As far as I’m concerned, my suggestion is that we shouldalways have a note book and a Chinese-English dictionary within easyreach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in ournotebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also turn to ourEnglish teacher for help, if necessary. In short, it is of great use tokeep a diary in English for the development of our writing skills. (209words)

6.第6篇(规定情景式作文) On University Tuition System in China Directions: It isreported that many universities in China have begun to charge studentsfor tuition. Should university students in China pay their own tuition? State two opposite opinions and illustrate them in detail. Write anessay of about 200 words within 40 minutes.

注:实 施:put …into effect 播 出:allocate vt.(=putaside) 教学设施:teaching facilities. 筹 集:raise vt. 办 学 校:run schools. 反对:be opposed to +n. 相比:compared with 沉重负担:aheavy burden 障 碍:obstacle 阻 碍:hinder…(from). 由 于:on account of

Tuitionsystem has become one of the hottest topics in China since it was putinto effect. Reports on this topic are published in a variety ofnewspapers and magazines. People differ greatly in their opinions onit. Some people think that there is no university in the world which isopen to students without tuition. As far as China is concerned, it is adeveloping country with the largest population in the world. Thegovernment is unable to allocate enough funds to pay for variousteaching facilities and many different kinds of expenses. One of theways to relieve the problem is for students to pay tuition. The moneyraised in this way can be used to improve the conditions for runningschools. Others, however, are opposed to the tuition system. They arguethat the living standard of the Chinese people, especially of those inthe poor rural areas, is still low, compared with that in the WesternWorld. The university tuition will certainly add to the already heavyburden of the parents, who live on their salaries or wages. Moreover, tuition may become an obstacle to the development of China’s highereducation. This is because it hinders some talented people fromentering the university just on account of their poverty. 7.第7篇(提纲式作文) Importance of Confidence Directions: In this part, you areto written an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essayshould be based on the information given in the outline below Outline:1. Importance of confidence 2. Reasons for lack of confidence 3.Necessity to build up confidence

The Importance of Confidence Whateverone does, one should do it with confidence. If one has no confidence, there is little possibility that one can achieve anything when facedwith hardships. This truth seems to be self-evident. In reality, however, we do see a lot of people who always complain that they lackthe ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great toovercome. For some, this might be true. But for many others, this onlyshows that they have lost heart. Why do some people often feelfrustrated even though they are capable of doing something? I thinkthere are two main reasons. In the first place, these people don’t havea correct estimate of themselves. For example, …… Secondly, there isanother possibility that they exaggerate the difficulties. They can’tsee ….. They tend to …….. In my opinion, one should build up faith inoneself as long as he has a right attitude towards his own abilities. We should neither underestimate nor overestimate our abilities. As aproverb says, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” With confidencewe can certainly cope with any task we are faced with.

8.第8篇( 提纲图表式作文 ) Directions: In this part, you are to write an essay ofabout 200 words within 40 minutes. Your essay must meet therequirements below. 1. Show your understanding of the meaning of thepicture below 2. State the harmful effects of fake and inferiorproducts 3. Suggest ways to fight against fake and inferior products

As the picture given depicts, thesocialist market-oriented economy in our country is developing rapidly, just like a truck running at a high speed. But the general public issurprised to find that there are more and more fake and inferiorproducts seriously hampering the expansion of our marker economy.Consumers have to be very careful in purchasing goods and services theyneed; otherwise they will fall into the traps set by the illegalmanufacturers who make fake and inferior products. There is no doubtthat fake and inferior products are extremely harmful. In the firstplace, they endanger people’s health, giving rise to a lot of injuryaccidents. For instance, inferior-quality medicines not only aggravatea patient’s condition, but also tend to threaten his life and, what’sworse, to result in his death. Secondly, fake and inferior products areusually sold on the cheap. In many cases they interfere with the normaleconomic order in our country, affecting the market of manyhigh-quality goods. This in a great degree, hinders the development ofour socialist market economy and harms the interests of our state. Therefore, we can say that fake and inferior products are a dangerous“tumor” in our healthy economy, which must be cut away as soonpossible. In my opinion, several strong measures should be adopted tofight against fake and inferior products. On the one hand, those whomake them must be severely punished by the law. On the other hand, dueto the growing complexity of the market, consumers are often faced withdeceptive practices. Although there are laws designed to protectconsumers, there is not a sufficient number of law enforcers to coverall the abuses of the marketplace. Hence, consumers should learn todiscern between true and false. Only in this way can they defend theirown legal rights and interests.

In thispart, you are to write within 40 minutes a composition of about 200words about the “The Relationship between Wealth and Happiness”. Youcan agree or disagree, completely or partially to the above statement. But whatever position you take, you should give sound supportingreasons. At the end of your composition you are required to draw yourown conclusion.

Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true thatmost of them try to acquire wealth by means of honest labour. Theirefforts contribute to the welfare of the society and at the same timeto the accumulation of their wealth, and hence to their happiness. There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness, especially in themodern society. Various kinds of up-to-date household appliances, latest fashions and recreations make their appearance with each passingday. All this makes our life more comfortable and colourful. Therefore, without money we cannot turn admiration into reality. But there areexceptions when wealth does not go hand in hand with happiness. Wealthmay tempt weak-willed persons to be addicted to harmful habits, such asdrug-taking and gambling, and result in their own ruin. Besides, aperson may lose his even some government officials who take advantageof their positions to take bribes from the people turning to them forhelp. All these will bring about the negative effect of wealth if wedon’t take a proper attitude to it. In my opinion, on no account can weidentify wealth with happiness. I also believe that one should neverreckon only on wealth to achieve happiness .

10.第10篇 (提纲图表式作文) Directions: A. Study the following graph carefullyand write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes B. Your essaymust be written neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. C. Your essay should meet therequirements below: 1. describe the increase in the farmer’s averagepersonal income 2. give possible reasons for the increase 3. predictfuture prospect

According to the figures given by the graph, the Chinese farmers’personal income rose steadily from 1970 to 1990. In the middle of1970’s their income was rather low. Their annual personal income wasabout 180 yuan. But in 1980 the average personal income increasedapproximately 50%, reaching 270 yuan. As is shown by the graph, in 1985their income doubled, amounting to 540 yuan. After that there was aconsistent tendency for income to grow. In a word, during the period of20 years the farmers’ income had gone up rapidly. There were tworeasons for the increase in the farmers’ income in China. Firstly, theChinese government had been carrying out a reform and opening policy. Alarge number of county-run enterprises had been set up in the ruralareas. Secondly, a significant reform of agricultural policy had beencarried out in China. The Party’s policy had brought farmers’initiative into full play. As a result, the agricultural output hadbeen on the rise all the time. All these factors resulted in the steadygrowth of farmers’ income. I believe that with a series of agriculturalpolicies being carried out, there will be even more rapid developmentin China’s agriculture. There is no doubt that the farmers’ livingstandard will be improved to a great extent. (220 words)

Outline: 1. Interpret the graph above. 2. Givepossible reasons for the change in the number of film-goers andTV-watchers. 3. Predict future prospect.

A recent survey analyzed the change in number of film-goersand TV watchers in X city. As is shown by the graph, there has been asharp decline in the number of film-goers during the period from 1992to 2002, adding up to 20,000 in 2002. On the other hand, the number ofTV watchers has steadily increase in the last decade, reaching 150,000in 2002. Finally, it is interesting to note that there were as manyfilm-goers as TV watchers in year 1998. There might be two reason, Ithink, for the change. Firstly, TV is not only a convenient source ofentertainment, but a comparatively cheap one. There is no point inarranging transport. And one needn’t pay for expensive seats at thecinema. Secondly, TV makes it possible for one to keep track of currentevents and the latest developments in science and technology. As aconsequence, most people prefer to stay at home, watching TV, ratherthan go out to the cinema, which wastes both time and money.Personally, there are still a lot of people who enjoy watching films. They argue that the film is a fascinating form of art. Sittingcomfortably in the cinema, one can appreciate the latest movies, whichwill usually be shown on TV far later on. Therefore, I trust the numberof film-goers will be on the rise in the future. 12.第12篇 (提纲式作文) What Is Success? Directions: In thispart, you are to write an essay of about 200 words within 40 minutes.Your composition must be based on the information given in the outlinebelow. Outline: 1. Different opinions on success 2. Ways to achievesuccess 3. My view on success

What Is Success? What is success? Differentpeople hold views on This question. Some think that one is successfulif he can make a great deal of money. Others argue that success meansholding an important government post. Still others believe that whoeverhas got high academic title is successful. It is clear that there arequite different opinions on success. In order to become successful, youshould first of all be both perseverant and hardworking. As you know, whatever you do, there are always two possible results: success andfailure. When you fail, you should never lose heart. On the contrary, you must build up your confidence and work even harder. You shouldalways keep in mind that perseverance is the mother of success andindustry is the key to it. In addition, you should pay great attentionto your work method. It is necessary for you to sum up your experienceconstantly and improve the efficiency of your work. Finally, it isimportant for you to get along well with your co-workers, care for eachother and help each other. If you follow these principles, you willcertainly achieve remarkable success in the future. In my opinion, success means achieving brilliant results in one’s work, that is,making outstanding contributions to the development of the country andbringing happiness to the people. So my conclusion is that even if onehas made great progress in what he does, I don’t think there’s anyreason for him to be conceited.

In my opinion, one should build up faith in oneself aslong as he has a right attitude towards his own abilities. We shouldneither underestimate nor overestimate our abilities. As a proverbsays, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” With confidence we cancertainly cope with any task we are faced with.
