  • Step 2

The diagnostic program lets you perform the following operations:
    (1) Read diagnostic trouble codes, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and display their meaning (over 3000 generic code definitions in the database)
    (2) Clear trouble codes and turn off the MIL ("Check Engine" light)

    Display current sensor data, including:
    (1) Engine RPM
    (2) Calculated Load Value

  • Step 3

    Computer system requirements:

    * Recommended to use at least a Pentium-100 (or AMD equivalent) with 16MB of RAM and Windows 95 or newer
    * Software may work on some lesser PC's, but anything less than the above recommendation is unsupported
    * Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, and XP
    * Available disk-space is a total non-issue, software requires less than 1 MB

  • Step 4

Install the ELM software program to your pc/laptop or pda. Most ELM sellers provide software programs or they can be downloaded for free from the internet.

  • Step 5

Connect the interface between the computer and the car by plugging one end of the interface into a Serial (RS232) (or USB port ) on your PC and the other end directly into the OBD-II port present in all 1996 and newer OBD2 passenger vehicles.

  • Step 6

Turn the car's ignition switch ON. No need to start the engine.

  • Step 7

Start the software program, click "Options", select the correct communications port. Use "Test" to confirm that the program can use the port and find the interface. Then "Save".

  • Step 8

Now it works. Make sure the software can reliably access all the control modules that it should in your car.

  • Step 9

Read diagnostic trouble fault codes, both generic and manufacturer-specific, and display their meaning (over 3000 generic fault code definitions in the database). · Clear fault trouble fault codes and turn off the MIL ("Check Engine" "Service soon-light) · Show current sensor data, including:
    o Engine RPM
