India : Textiles & Apparels Register Highest Growth in June

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of June 2005 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation of the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation. The General Index stands at 212.5, which is 11.7 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of June 2004.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of June 2005 stand at 150.6, 223.7, and 188.8 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 5.8 percent, 12.5 percent and 9.4 percent as compared to June 2004. The cumulative growth during April-June, 2005-06 over the corresponding period of 2004-05 in the three sectors have been 4.5, 11.2 and 7.6 percent respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 10.3%

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for June 2005, the indices for May 2005 have undergone the first revision and those for March 2005, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for March 2005 and May 2005.

As many as 16 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of June 2005 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. 'Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel)’ have shown the highest growth of 37.6 percent, followed by 20.2 percent in 'Basic Chemicals & Chemical Products (except products of Petroleum & Coal)’ and 19.2 percent in ‘Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products'. On the other hand, 'Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment’ has shown a negative growth of 0.4 percent.
