what is the Semantic Web?

 

what is web?

web is the idea of an open community:Anyone can contribute their ideas to the whole, for anyone to see. But the Web often feels like it is "a mile wide but an inch deep".

 

smart web, dumb web

What do we mean by "dumb"? this means inconsistent, out of synch, and disconnected.

 

smart web applications

the reason we are improving the Web infrastructure is to allow smart application to perform to their potential

the semantic web needs to get the right data to the right place so the smart application can do their work.

so the question is "What can the Web infrastructure provide to improve the consistency and availability of Web data"?

 

A Connected Web Is a Sarter Web

 

 

Semantic Data

In all of these case, the data describe the presentation of information rather than describe the entities in the world.

One commen way to make Web applications more integrated is to back them up with a relational database and generate the webpages from queries run against that database.

Another approach to making Web applications a bit smarter is to write program code in a genaral-purpose language that keeps data from different places up to date.

these solutions are more cumbersome to implement.

the common trend in these solutions is to move away from having the presentation of the data be the primary representation of the data;

 

A Distributed Web of Data

the main idea of the Semantic Web is to support a distributed Web at the level of the data rather than at the level of the presentation.

the data model that the Semantic Web infrastructure uses to represent this distributed web of data is called the RDF(Resource Description Framework).
