If you are developing an application using one of the Crystal Reports SDKs for Visual Studio, you need to deploy the Crystal Reports Runtime on each computer where your application is expected to run. In order to help you easily deploy the runtime on any computer running your application, Business Objects provides a set of runtime packages, i.e. redistributables, implemented using the Windows Installer technology. These packages are implemented in the form of executable Windows Installer (MSI) files or Merge Module (MSM) packages.

The executable Windows Installer (MSI) packages can be used to directly deploy the Crystal Reports Runtime on the end user’s machine, for supporting thick client desktop applications, or the web server, for supporting web applications built with ASP or ASP.NET. The MSI packages can either be manually installed on the target computer, or pushed to many client computers on the network by a network administrator. They can also be embedded as part of your application’s setup in the form of a pre-requisite, custom action, or similar.

The Merge Module (MSM) packages cannot be used to directly deploy the Crystal Reports Runtime, but can be embedded as part of your application’s setup. This method embeds the Crystal Reports components together with your own components in a single setup. When you install your application using such a setup, the Crystal Reports Runtime is installed along with your application.

The Windows Installer (MSI) packages are a better choice than the Merge Module (MSM) packages for redistributing the Crystal Reports Runtime to your users. One of the most significant disadvantages for using the merge modules is that updating Crystal Reports to take advantage of the new fixes requires you to rebuild and redeploy the setup for your own application. In addition, the MSI packages let you deploy Crystal Reports only once on the target computer and support any number of applications, without having to embed it in each application’s setup separately.

Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime Package for the .NET Framework

The Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime redistributable package installs the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime and associated files required to run applications developed with Crystal Reports 2008 to target the .NET Framework. This file contains two versions of the redistributable installer.  The MSI version is a standard MSI installer than can be run directly, deployed over the network, or even be added as part of your application setup (e.g. as a custom action). The EXE version is a self-extracting and highly-compressed executable that works in the same way as the MSI installer, but may be useful when you need to ship the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime together with your product under very restrictive size constraints (e.g. on a CD with limited space).

Note: Using the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime redistributable package is the recommended way of deploying the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime as this package allows you to update the previously deployed Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime when new fixes are released without having to redeploy the applications that depend on it.

Merge Modules for Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime Deployments for the .NET Framework

The Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime Merge Modules may be used to directly embed the Crystal Reports runtime into your own setup, so it is delivered and deployed to your users in the same setup package that installs your application. Unlike the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime redistributable package, which can be added to another setup in an indirect way (e.g. using a custom action), the merge modules allow you to tightly embed the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime components into your setup. In addition, they are broken into a core runtime, language packs and mapping support, so they provide a little bit more flexibility than the standard redistributable package.

Note: The standard MSI redistributable package is a better choice than merge modules for redistributing the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime to your users. One of the most significant disadvantages for using the merge modules is that updating Crystal Reports to take advantage of the new fixes requires you to rebuild and redeploy the setup for your own application.

CrystalReports 2008 ClickOnce Package for Visual Studio 2005

Crystal Reports 2008 supports ClickOnce deployments with Visual Studio 2005. The default choice with the product is to download the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime redistributable package as a pre-requisite from Business Object’s web site at the time your users try to run your application. However, you can avoid this step for your users by deploying the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime together with your applications.

To deploy the Crystal Reports 2008 Runtime together with your applications when using ClickOnce, you should download the file below and unzip its content to the ClickOnce BootStrapper packages folder. This will prepare your installation of Visual Studio 2005 to enable the use of the option to “Download prerequisites from the same location as my application” when setting up the ClickOnce prerequisites options for Crystal Reports 2008.

Note: When unzipping the content of the file below, you should preserve the folder structure and overwrite any existing files found in the BootStrapper packages folder. Typically this folder is found at:
C:/Program Files/Microsoft Visual Studio 8/SDK/v2.0/BootStrapper/Packages, or
C:/Program Files/Microsoft.NET/SDK/v2.0/BootStrapper/Packages
