This article defines the registry settings that provide new user restrictions that a computer administrator can apply to Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 provides computer administrators more latitude in restricting users' access to various features in the program. Each of the following values is of type DWORD. To turn on the value, set it to 1. To turn off the value, set it zero (0).

Note You can use Group Policy or the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) to apply most of these settings. When you apply most of these settings, a restart of Internet Explorer is required for the changes to take effect.

Restriction values in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Restrictions and HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Restrictions registry keys

The following restriction values reside in either of these registry keys:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Policies/Microsoft/InternetExplorer/Restrictions
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/InternetExplorer/Restrictions
When a computer administrator restricts menu commands by implementing the appropriate registry value, users may receive the following error message if they try to use the menu commands:
The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.
  • NoFileOpen: Turns off the Open command on theFile menu.
  • NoFileNew: Turns off the New command on theFile menu.
  • NoBrowserOptions: Turns off the Internet Options command on theTools menu.
  • NoSelectDownloadDir: Turns off Save on the FileDownload dialog box.
  • NoBrowserClose: Turns off Close button, located in the upperright corner of the window or dialog box. This registry value also turns offthe Close command on the Filemenu.
The following registry values remove the associated menu when the appropriate registry key and value is implemented:
  • NoBrowserSaveAs: Removes the Save As command on theFile menu.
  • NoFavorites: Removes Favorites menu and disables theFavorites bar.
  • NoHelpItemTipOfTheDay: Removes the Tip of the Day command on theHelp menu.
  • NoHelpItemNetscapeHelp: Removes the For Netscape Users command onthe Help menu.
  • NoHelpItemTutorial: Removes the Internet Explorer Tutorial commandon the Help menu.
  • NoHelpItemSendFeedback: Removes the Send Feedback command on theHelp menu.
  • NoPrinting: Removes Print command on theFile menu.
  • No_LaunchMediaBar: Removes the Media Bar command on the toolbar when the user plays onlinecontent.
The following menus are disabled when the appropriate registry key and value is added:
  • NoTheaterMode: Disables F11 key (full-screen mode).
  • NoBrowserContextMenu: Disables the right-click shortcut menu on a Web page.
  • NoFindFiles: Turns the F3 command and the Search bar.
  • NoViewSource: Turns off the Source command on theView menu. However, to completely disable user's ability toview the source, the NoBrowserContextMenu value must be added.
  • NoOpeninNewWnd: Turns off the CTRL+N command and the Opencommand to open a new window.
  • AlwaysPromptWhenDownload: Makes the Always ask before opening this type offile check box on the on the Safe Open File dialogbox unavailable so that it is always selected.

    Note This value does not apply to any file that is determined to beunsafe.

  • NoNavButtons: Disables the Back and Forwardnavigation buttons on the toolbar.
  • NoHelpMenu: Disables the Internet Explorer Helpmenu.
  • No_MediaBarOnlineContent: Disallows the playing of online content.

Restriction values in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Toolbars/Restrictions registry key

The following toolbar restriction values reside in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Toolbars/Restrictions


When the following menu has been restricted by using the appropriate registry DWORD value, users may receive the following error message:
The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.


  • NoToolbarOptions: The user receives the error message when they try to click anycommand on the View menu except Customize andLock the Toolbars.

    The following menus are removedwhen the appropriate registry DWORD value is added:
  • NoToolBar: Removes the toolbar. However you can add standard buttons on theView Toolbar menu. To completely enable this setting, you mustenable the NoToolbarOptions DWORD value.
  • NoAddressBar: Removes the Address bar.
  • NoLinksBar: Removes the Link bar. The user receives the following errormessage when they try to click Links on theToolbar menu:
    The operation has beencanceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact yoursystem administrator.

    Restriction values in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer registry key

    The following restriction values reside in the following registrykey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer
    The following menu is removed when the appropriate registry DWORDvalue is added:
  • NoWindowsUpdate: Removes the Windows Update command on theTools menu.
To disable the Synchronize command on the Tools menu, follow these steps:
  1. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Infodelivery/Restrictions
    Note If the subkey does not exist, create it. To do this, follow thesesteps:
    1. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft
    2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
    3. Type Internet Explorer, and then press ENTER.
    4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
    5. Type Infodelivery, and then press ENTER.
    6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
    7. Type Restrictions, and then press ENTER.
  2. Right-click theHKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/InternetExplorer/Infodelivery/Restrictions subkey, point toNew, and then click DWORD Value.
  3. Type NoManualUpdates, and then pressENTER.
  4. Right-click NoManualUpdates, andthen click Modify.
  5. In the Value data box, type 1, andthen click OK.
