CASE: MS SQL SERVER 2008 R2 service could not be started.

 

       As I am taking over an existing project from team, I need to install MS SQL SERVER 2008 R2 for development and testing. All installation steps pass successfully and those services can be started for the first time. However when I try to use Mangement Studio after machine restarts, it prompts an error screen as below:

 

        It is in a normal status on the connection last time and no changes have been made about server configuration. I wonder if the SQL SERVER service is started automatically when the user login Windows. Then I check the status of those services and find only SQL SERVER service is Stopped while other services are OK. It seems that the service is not started automatically even though its start mode has been marked as . I try to start it manually but fail, with screenshot below:

 

        Since there is no error code this time, I have to search the error info via internet. In summary there are various solutions to it:

        1) Insufficient RAM in use; //release memory

        2) Incorrect data path settings; //restore to default settings of installation

        3) Incompatible software edition; //reinstall a compatible edition

        4) VIA protocol enabled; //disable VIA protocol

 

           Case 1 ~ 3 do not match my case. I check the VIA protocol status in Configuration Manager and it is exactly  shown as below:

 

        I change it into Disabled and try again. The SQL SERVER service can be started manually now and it works normally after machine restarts with automatic startup.
