A teenager has been given a 30-month prison sentence after her newborn babydied when she abandoned it. Shanghai Jing'an District People's Court announced the verdict recently.

The mother surnamed Li gave birth to a boy in a bathroom at an Internet cafe just four days after she turned 18.

She abandoned the baby in a sink and fled.

A cleaner at the cafe in North Shaanxi Road later found the boy and called for help. An ambulance crew arrived but the baby was declared dead at the scene. Li was arrested several days later at another Internet cafe.

An investigation found she had come to Shanghai from Guizhou Province in April after discovering she was pregnant.

On the morning she gave birth, she had been surfing the Internet and playing games for several hours, before going to the bathroom as she had stomach ache. Shortly afterwards she gave birth to the boy.

Li said she panicked when she saw the baby, but managed to cut the umbilical cord.

She placed him in the sink and left. Li told the court it was considered extremely shameful for someone her age to give birth, and said she believed the boy would be adopted once found.

But the cleaner did not find the baby until two hours later, by which time he had died.

After leaving the cafe, Li said she wandered aimlessly around the streets for the rest of the day and night.

The following day she bought a train ticket for her home town, Zhijin County in Guizhou Province, but later returned it as she was missing her baby. She headed back towards the Internet cafe, but was afraid of going back in when she spotted an employee carefully studying everyone who went in and out of the building. However, surveillance cameras in the cafe recorded Li leaving after giving birth and she was arrested several days later.

Due to a lack of proper sex education, Li did not realize the pregnancy until a relatively late stage. She did not tell the baby's father, a former schoolmate, and wanted to have an abortion but found it too expensive. She left home because it was considered wrong for an unmarried woman to be pregnant and she was not getting on with her father and stepmother.

Li borrowed money from friends and relatives and came to Shanghai, where she said she became addicted to the Internet and spent most of her days in Internet cafes. She had only 400 yuan (US$50) left when she gave birth.
