为了尽量剥离对系统标准的依赖，OMA（Open Mobile Alliance）给出了用户面的AGPS协议，即SUPL（SecureUser Plane Location）。该协议从移动通信系统的用户面传输数据，实现对GPS的辅助，移动通信系统本身的角色成为数据传输的承载（Barrier），而不是数据信令交互的参与者。SUPL协议的服务端也不再受到通信运营商的限制，更加开放。

SUPL的好处，举一个实际的例子就可明显看出。Nokia的上一代机皇N95支持AGPS。该机内置的GPS芯片为TI的NavLink，GPS天线则采用Pifa天线，这种配置，如果放在导航仪上，肯定无法卖得出去。实际测试结果也很符合其配置：在开阔天空下，如果使用自主定位，启动时间至少在3分钟以上，但当打开采用SUPL协议的AGPS功能后，即使在高楼林立的市中心地区，启动时间也可在10秒钟以内。两者性能差别一天一地。这也可见Nokia为何底气十足的推出那么多款采用Pifa天线的GPS手机了。（顺带一句，Nokia的SUPL协议服务端地址为supl.nokia.com。）除了Nokia外，HTC的多款GPS手机上使用的搜星快手功能，也是基于SUPL协议的AGPS。

前段时间，《GPS World》杂志上一篇文章提出了BGPS的名词，即AGPS加上星历扩展算法等结合的一种概念。从技术实现的角度来看，更多的是一种概念，
