He married Jeanne Devolle several years after Chanel was born. At birth Chanel’s name was entered into the official registry as “Chasnel.” It is speculated that this spelling was a clerical error or an ancient spelling of the family name. Thus in some circumstances strictly following the opinions of the majority is a poor guide to determining what actions to take.
