The Digital Topographic Support System (DTSS) will provide the capability to generate, collect and manage geospatial information. It will also provide a suite of geospatial information services that will give the warfighter terrain analysis products, map reproduction capabilities and geodetic survey support. This standardized, automated tactical combat support system is capable of receiving, reformatting, creating, storing, retrieving, updating, merging and manipulating digital topographic data, and it provides for the reproduction of hard copy topographic products.

The DTSS will be consistent with Army 2010-and-beyond objectives. The DTSS consists of six distinct configurations that are capable of providing direct topographic support to Army commanders and staff deployed at key maneuver echelons, from theater down to brigade.

These configurations include the DTSS-base (DTSS-B), the DTSS-deployable (DTSSD), the DTSS-heavy (DTSS-H), the DTSS-light (DTSS-L), the DTSS-high-volume map production (DTSS-HVMP) and the DTSS-survey (DTSS-S).

These configurations will use a combination of government and commercial software, operating within the Army common hardware/software environment. The DTSS-B, -H, -L and -D configurations have similar capabilities in that they will use compatible hardware, software and operating procedures to provide terrain analysis and related topographic support to warfighters at theater through brigade levels. The DTSS-B, -H, -L, -D and -S configurations will provide large-format, plotting capabilities to support low-volume output requirements. The DTSS-HVMP will provide high-volume, large-format digital printing capabilities to support high-volume printing of topographic products, and the DTSS-S will provide geodetic survey support across the battlefield.
