  About Glass
Glass is the application that enables camera phones to read codes andretrieve content. It was created by HP Labs in Bristol, UK. A keycomponent of Glass is Lavasphere by Gavitec, the image-processingtechnology that enables camera phones to read codes.
Glass isdesigned for Series 60 camera phones with texting (SMS) and web (WAP,HTTP) connectivity. Due to issues with firmware implementations on someSeries 60 handsets, Glass is currently available only for the followinghandsets:
·   Nokia 3650, 3660, 6600, 6630, 6670, 6680, 7610, 7650, N70, N90
·   Siemens SX1
The latest version of Glass is 1.02

  Overview of Glass

Note:this overview refers to version 1.02. Version 1.02 includes minor fixesover 1.01. Version 1.01 adds the following to version 1.00:
·   Support for Opera web browser
·   Support for codes that dial numbers, such as tel:+44555555555
·   Support for codes containing data for direct consumption, such as data:text/vcard,BEGIN...
·  Compatibility with NTT Docomo's standard for 'Bookmarks' in codes, oneof the most commonly used Japanese formats for the data within codes.
Glasshas a "Reader" screen for reading and activating codes (known as the"Looking" screen in version 1.00), a "History" screen for codes you'vepreviously activated or saved for later, and an "Options" screen forconfiguring Glass. Reading a code means having Glass extract the datafrom it. That doesn't involve any network communication. Activating acode means causing Glass to retrieve whatever content the code linksto. That generally means switching to the phone's browser to downloadcontent, sending a text message so that the provider can send youcontent via a returned text message, or, more rarely, dialling a numberto make a call or consuming data held entirely in a code. You switchbetween the Looking, History and Options screens (not shown) bypressing the jog button to the right or left.

Reading a code to see the pop-up text

Inthe Reader screen (left image above), Glass is attempting to recognisea code from whatever you are pointing it at. You can tell when it hasread a code because pop-up text will appear superimposed over themiddle of the screen, as well as an icon beneath the camera image toindicate whether activating the code will cause a download , send a text (SMS) message , dial a number or consume data in the code .

Thepeople who created the code have generally included pop-up text to tellyou something relating to what the code is printed on or the content itlinks to. It may help you decide whether to access that content. Ifthere is no pop-up text in the code, Glass uses the default message"Click to activate".

The following picture shows pop-up text scrolling across the centre of the screen:

To read a code, hold the phone "flat" so that the corners of the codeare as square as possible. The code should occupy as much of the screenas possible but must be complete and in focus. It is OK for the code tobe rotated, although it is slightly easier for Glass to read it if itisn't.
If you can see a code but no pop-up text appears, there are several possible reasons:

High Capacity Color Barcode

HighCapacity Color Barcode technology, developed within Microsoft Research, advances the state of the art in storing digital information on analogmedia.

Higher Density Storage Capability

TheHigh Capacity Color Barcode barcode format takes advantage of advancedcomputer imaging devices along with processing power to enable higherdensity storage of data on analog printed media. The format achievesthis by using a different barcode symbol shape in combination withmultiple colors per symbol.

Currentlylaboratory tests have yielded using eight colors, 2,000 binary bytes,or 3,500 alphabetical characters per square inch in its highest densityform using a 600dpi business card scanner. This equates to two pages ofa novel. The symbol size can be changed to accommodate the differingfidelities of imaging devices. The barcode can be printed using aregular inkjet or laser jet printer.
