词源、派生
1.拉丁词internus，inside的意思。
internist，internal medicine方面的specialist，关注你身体内部。
另一个词intern(interne)是在医院实习的医学院毕业生。
2.希腊词gyne，woman的意思，加上logos，science的意思，就是gynecology，关于女士的科学（以实际意义，医学）。adj是gynecological。
3.拉丁词obstetrix，midwife的意思，它也源于拉丁动词，意思是to stand。midwife站在孕妇旁边接生。后缀−ician,意思是expert，所以就有obsterician。obstetrics是一门医学专业，adj：obstetric或obstetrical。
4.希腊词paidos，意思child；iatreia，意思medical healing；−ician，意思expert。组成pediatrician。
pediatrics，就是medical healing of a child。adj：pediatric。
在单词pedestal,pedal,pedestrian含有前缀ped−,来自拉丁词pedis，foot的意思。尽管paidos和pedis在英文仲有相同的拼写，但是并没有联系。
pedagogy，由paidos，跟agogos，意思leading，整体意思the leading of children，实际上指的是教学中原则与方法。adj：pedagogical。
pedagogue精通pedagogy，是一位教员、教师，但今天这个词变成一种contempt，他是个怎样的教员？narrow-minded、old-fashioned。。。
demagogue也一样被玩坏了，本义是a leader of the people，agogos，leader，demos，people。今天它的意思是one who attempts to mislead the people，一个政客，试图通过雄辩煽动民众，获得选票进入权力系统。一旦获选，就会利用手中政治权力实现进一步的野心（有没有想起Frank Anderwood）。

5.希腊词derma，意思skin，dermatologist就是专业于dermatology，adj：dermatological。

epidermis，the outermost layer of the skin。
taxidermist，他的business 是taxidermy，剥动物的皮，做皮草。
pachyderm，有很厚的皮的动物，大象，河马，犀牛。。。
dermatitis，各种皮肤刺激、感染的通称，皮炎。
6.希腊词ophthalmos，意思eye，加上logos，意思science或study，就是专业ophthalmology，这方面的专家ophthalmologist，adj：ophthalmological。
还有一个旧词也是称呼这类专家的，oculist，来源于拉丁词根oculus。

monocle，单片眼镜，英国旧电影中上流社会的象征。
binoculars，双筒望远镜。
inoculate，接种。要接种的时候，就是通过在皮肤刺穿一个“眼”或“洞”注射的。这个词跟眼有关，作者觉得（也可能是觉得别人会）strangely enough。其实一点也不奇怪，像我们这边，当地人会把小洞叫成“眼”。针眼也是很普通的叫法。
希腊词opsis，optikos，意思sight or vision，加上metron，意思measurement，就是optometrist，不是医生，不做手术，也不管理药物，而是检查视力、青光眼，开处方并配眼镜。他们的专业叫optometry。adj：optometric或optometrical。opsis，optikos加上−ician（expert），就是optician。他们执行optometrist或ophthalmologist的处方，按照要求魔镜片，他们不检查病人。他们的专业是optics。adj：optical。
7.希腊词根orthos，意思straight或correct，加上paidos，child，就是orthopedist，本义是straighten children。在18世纪，the correction of the spinal curvature in children是orthopedics领域的主要任务。今天这个专业主治成人、儿童的骨骼、关节损伤等问题。adj：orthopedic。
orthos，加上odontos，意思tooth，就是orthodontia，the straightening of teeth。这方面的专家就是orthodontist，adj：orthodontic。
8.希腊词kardia，意思heart，加上logos，science，就是cardiologist。Specialty是cardiology，adj：cardiological。
cardiaccondition，some malfunctioning of the heart；
cardiogram，an electrically produced record of the heartbeat；
cardiograph，the instrument that produces cardiogram。
9.希腊词neuron，nerve，加上logos，science，就有neurologist，所属专业是neurology，adj：neurological。
neuron加上algos，pain，就是neuralgia，acute pain along the nerves and their branches。
neuritis，inflammation of the nerves。
neurosis，neuron加上−osis，abormalordiseasedcondition，but it is not a disorder of nerve，“an illness characterized by excessive use of energy for unproductive purposes so that personality development is hindered or stopped”。
neurotic，adj，or noun， a person suffering from neurosis。
10.希腊词psyche，spirit，soul，mind，加上−osis，就有psychosis，a full-blown mental disorder，unlike neurosis。
psychotic，adj，noun，a true psychotic has lost contact with reality—at least with reality as most of us perceive it，though no doubt psychotic people have their own form of reality。
psyche加上iatreia，就有psychiatrist，mind-healer。专业是psychiatry，adj：psychiatric。
