Today David as well as me meeted with Marwan. David made a presentation about his research,the multi-scale characteristic of sediment in Huangfuchuan catchment. I don’t know much about David’s research, so my note may be mess…

Empirical approach

Sediment yield: SSY=SY/A

Limitation: British Columbia river VS. Yellow river

  • Spatial pattern SSY~A
  • Spatially distribution model… the hillslope-link model was adopted. From the Sour, to the Left or Right hillslope..
  • Relation of SSY & A: increase straightly first, then decrease slightly.
  • SSY=C¯WA=C¯h¯. C¯ is the averaged concentration of the sediment, h¯ is the averaged depth of the runoff.
  • Learned influence from STD (Sediment Trapping Dams). They have big impacts on h and SSY.

Then Professor began to ask a lot of questions. I don’t know the exactly problem, but I leaned a lot of details needed to be noticed if I want to make a presentation.

  • First, the source of the figures and data should be clear and should be added in the PPT.
  • One question is the main stem and the tributary needed to be distinguished.
  • The curve is easily to be controlled by the point at the border. David thinks the data should be more enough.
  • You should figure out all the equations that you used, know the physical meaning of all the parameters. For example, in Fei’s sediment equation, why use D90?
  • The small data/points can be misleading! You’d better to set the axial start from a nonzero value.

That’s my summary. Hope to learn more in the future.
