Fiber to the home (FTTH), also called "fiber to the premises" (FTTP), is the installation and use of optical fiber from a central point directly to individual buildings such as residences, apartment buildings and businesses to provide unprecedented high-speed Internet access. FTTH dramatically increases the connection speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps)—20 to 100 times as fast as a typical cable modem or DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) connection.
FTTH has obvious advantages for the consumer, both today and in the foreseeable future, offering improved performance for broadband services.
FTTH provides the highest possible speeds of Internet access downstream (from the network to the end user) as well as upstream (from the user to the network). FTTH allows at least 1 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload, faster than mobile connections, satellite connections and other fixed technologies, like ADSL.
An FTTH broadband connection offers an improved network reliability in that fibre optics transmissions are immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Therefore fiber optic cables during the transmission can produce lower noise and crosstalk.
It is known that magnetic fields and current induction can not only just generate noise in signal carrying conductors but also leak out the information. However, there are no radiated magnetic fields around optical fibers. That makes the fiber network secure enough to protect content from piracy.

Distribution cable can be directly connected to optical equipment for the fibers normally have a 900µm buffer. The terminated fibers may be directly connected to equipment without use of a patch panel and can be used as pigtails and patch cords.
