How To Create A WinPE 2.0 Bootable CD or DVD?

Before we go further, if you don't already have Windows OPK (for Vista) installed on your Windows XP system, you can download the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK).

If you don't have Windows OPK and is on dial-up connection to the Internet, I don't think you can go any further, unless you ask someone with a broadband connection to download the Windows AIK which is some 992.2 MB!

1) Open the Windows PE Tools Command (Start > All Programs > Windows OPK / Windows AIK > Windows PE Tools Command Prompt)
2) Now, you need to run the Copype.cmd script. This script requires two arguments: hardware architecture and destination location.

To run this script, type the following in the command prompt :

Copype.cmd x86 c:/winpe_x86

amd64 - for AMD 64-bit system
ia64 - Intel Itanium system
x86 - this can be used in most x86 systems

Running the script above creates a winpe_x86 directory in C drive and copies all the necessary files for that architecture, in this case x86. You can choose to change the folder name, and drive letter.

3) Copy any tools you want available into C:/winpe_x86/iso (imagex, pkgmgr, etc.)

To add ImageX (a tool for capturing and applying images during deployment) type: copy "C:/Program Files/Windows AIK/Tools/x86/imagex.exe" C:/winpe_x86/iso/

Copy this to a notepad:

/WINDOWS/inf/*.pnf

then save it as Wimscript.ini to the winpe_x86/ ISO directory.

4) Now we need to create an .iso file by using the Oscdimg tool and insert everything in the iso folder into this .iso file.

At a command prompt, type:

oscdimg -n -bc:/winpe_x86/etfsboot.com c:/winpe_x86/ISO c:/winpe_x86/winpe_x86.iso


For ia64 architecture, replace Etfsboot.com with Efisys.bin.

5) Now, burn the image (Winpe_x86.iso) onto a CD or DVD, whichever is available.
