Microsoft will ship Windows 10 later this year and with it comes an offerto upgrade existing versions of Windows to the operating system for free.

Since the majority of Windows users probably does not know about that offer as they may not read tech sites at all or only sporadically, Microsoft pushed updates to Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems that prepare the system forthe update.

At least one of the updates, KB 3035583, appears to have been designed to advertise Windows 10 once it comes out.

While that may make sense, some users may not want to upgrade their systemto Windows 10 after all. If you prefer to keep using Windows 7 or even Windows8, there is no reason to keep these updates installed on the computer.

How many updates we are talking about?

• KB 3035583 - According to Microsoft, this update enables "additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available".
• KB 2952664 - Labeled a compatibility upgrade for upgrading Windows 7, its purpose is to "make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows".
• KB 2976978 - A compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 which "performs diagnostics on the Windows system [..] to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.
• KB 3021917 - Does the same as KB 2976978 but on Windows 7.
• KB 3044374 - This update for Windows 8.1 enables systems to upgrade from the current operating system to a later version of Windows.
• KB 2990214 . Does the same as KB 3044374 but on Windows 7.

Those are the updates currently provided by Microsoft. Microsoft notesthat users should not remove or block the updates 3044374 and 2990214 as theyare used for Windows Update functionality and not only to upgrade to Windows10.

Remove those updates from Windows

First thing you may want to do is find out whether those updates areinstalled. If they are installed, you can remove them from the system and blockthem from being installed again.

Do the following to check if an update is installed:

1. Tap on the Windows-key, type cmd and hit enter.
2. Type powershell and hit enter.
3. Use the command get-hotfix -id KB3035583 to find out whether the update is installed
4. To speed things up, query for all updates in a single command like this:
   get-hotfix -id KB3035583, KB2952664,KB2976978,KB3021917,KB3044374,KB2990214

Obviously, only updates provided for the operating system may beinstalled. The updates on the screenshot above have been found on a systemrunning Windows 7.

You can use the command line to remove Windows Patches as well.

1. If you are still in Powershell type exit to leave.
2. Use the command wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664to uninstall a patch

This removes the update that you have specified from the system. You willget a prompt for that and need to run the command for all updates separately.

Note that you may get a restart prompt after uninstalling updates.Complete the process before you do so.

 

Windows Update will pick up those updates again after you restart thecomputer. Since you don't want them to be installed again, you need toblock those updates from being installed.

1. Tap on the Windows key, type Windows Update and hit enter.
2. If the updates are not listed on the page, perform a manual check for updates.
3. Click on "□ important updates are available" afterwards.
4. Right-click on any of the Windows 10 related updates and select "hide update" from the listing.

Doing so blocks these updates from being installed automatically on thesystem.

 

These updates are displayed in a light gray font color afterwards and onceyou leave the page, don't show up anymore.

Should you want to restore them at a later point in time, for instancebecause you want to upgrade to Windows 10 after all, then you need to restorethem with a click on "restore hidden updates" in the interface.

There you find them all listed and options to re-enable them.

 

While you should not see any side-effects after the removal, it may be agood idea to monitor the system after the removal to make sure that this isindeed the case.

win7系统中如何只让PDF文件显示图标？

问题描述：
win7系统默认的情况是显示文件的缩略图。这个功能看图片非常爽，但是PDF文件显示缩略图却看着不舒服。当我们在文件夹选项“始终显示图标，从不显示缩略图”前打钩时，PDF文件和图片都显示成图标了。哎，有没有高人知道如何设置PDF文件显示图标，而图片显示缩略图呢？

首先：在win7中要把缩略图改成图标显示的方法，据我所知有两种：
    > 1. 修改“文件夹选项”
          有两个选项： Always show icons, never thumbnails,总是显示图标，不显示缩略图
                                Display file icon on thumbnails， 在缩略图上显示图标
           自己斟酌选择。
    > 2. 把你的鼠标移至桌面的计算机图标--右键--属性---左下角的“性能信息和工具”---左上角第二项的“调整视觉效果”----根据自己的需要勾选就行了。

正货：对于部分文件类型使用缩略图显示（如jpg,png），部分文件类型使用图标显示（如：pdf, ppt, doc...）的设置办法：

有人说，要么全显图标，要么全显缩略图。除非有第三方的软件来管理（但他没找到）。

也有人说，下载shexview(a great system tool from NirSoft)   x64version Download link,    中文版下载

打开软件 ，禁用“MF XXX Property Handler”行，意思就是禁用微软xxx类文件的处理软件。

但是我在这里面没有找到pdf扩展名。。。囧了。

这样做了以后，同时也有人问：对于pdf文件的缩略图没有被shell扩展所建立吗？（For example it does not show anything from Adobe - does that mean that thumbnails for PDF files are not generated by the shell extension?）

There are a couple of potential options.

1. Open Explorer/Tools/Folder options/View and check the first box Always show icons, never thumbnails

2. You can customize the way way each folder controls the display of the objects within. Right click on a folder and choose Properties then Customize In the drop down list for Optimize this folder for, select General items

3. Changing the View type will work too.
