what is a device drive

Device drivers, in lay terms, are the code that the device uses to interface with the operating system. Basically, it's how the OS communicates with the device, talking, and working together nicely. If it doesn't have the drivers, the OS doesn't understand what the function, purpose, or exactly what it is even talking to. It's as if you put a Chinese speaking person with an English speaking person. They don't understand each others language, their software doesn't speak each other, but if you put in a translator which speaks both (I.E. the driver), they can communicate without many issues THROUGH the translator.
